"Social justice, equal opportunity, the end to poverty, feed the hungry and the education every child regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or gender. These are the things that America stands for. These are the ideals that we as a nation and as a people should always be for regardless of what our religion is; regardless of what our ethnicity is; regardless of our politician persuasion.
They may all be somewhat idealistic in nature and not always completely practical to put into practice, but they are constitutionally sound and they are issues and concerns we should be striving to obtain. We shouldn't be about dividing our nation and its people by restricting one single citizens right to vote. Voter fraud as a problem does not exist and has not existed. Restricting our rights and our freedoms is in my opinion bigoted and racist in nature and in actual fact.
The only reason to try and make it difficult for someone to exercise their inherent right to vote is because you don't want a certain segment of our society voting. Making it difficult goes against the very precepts of a free and open society. It is as abhorrent to me as a closed gated community.
We cannot realize the full measure of what our founders intended for our nation to be by closing doors to opportunity; by forcing more and more of our citizens into poverty; by restricting rights and dividing our citizens along ethnic lines and religious lines. As Dr. King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Those who are seeking to become the president of the United States shouldn't be running to divide its citizens. They should be talking about the issues that are paramount to our nations citizens. They should be striving to create a nation where there equal opportunity; where everyone has enough to eat; where social justice is extended to everyone. They should be reaching out to every citizen regardless of what religion they practice; regardless of what their sexual orientation is; regardless of what their social and economic status in life is.
Creating fear and sowing the seeds of hatred and bigotry and pandering to the wealthiest 1 percent is wrong on so many levels. Candidates who offer hate, fear, greed and avarice as campaign promises should be rejected and exposed for what they stand for and for the vile evil message they are pushing, just to get elected. Dividing to conquer may be great in the movies but as a method of putting our nation back together and creating a life free from want and fear for our citizens is not the direction we as a nation and a people should be heading.
We see and hear candidates on the debate circuit who talk of 'family values'; who profess personal relationships with God and who say they are Christians and hold to the principles and ideals taught by that Jewish Rabbi from Nazareth. Yet, when you peel back the veneer of their rhetoric you find they do not follow what he taught. He taught peace, love, compassion and being one together. They speak of division, hate, bigotry and greed. Where is their Christian precepts? Where is their Christian ideals? The Christianity I grew up with and the Christianity I know today is not the same Christianity they profess to believe in and follow!" ----- Bob Bearden
